Go behind the sign & on the boulevard to director John Waters' Hollywood Walk of Fame Star Ceremony, Diane Linkletter's apartment building where the 20 year-old committed suicide, and the now torn down hotel where Divine died. In September, I met up with Adam Papagan of Cool L.A. Tours at our office at Artisan’s Patio on Hollywood Blvd. We were hoping to interview some of John Waters’ filthiest fans at the director’s Star Ceremony. The Divine Master Plan

A month before Divine's death in March 1988, the film "Hairspray" is released, and the performer's dreams of becoming a "respected" actor were finally coming true. He's lands a guest role on the 90s TV series "Married... With Children." The day before his death, he spends it rehearsing for his appearance at Sunset Gower Studios (1438 N Gower St.). Divine stays at the Regency Plaza Suites Hotel in Los Angeles (7940 Hollywood Blvd. - the hotel is demolished in '07) and enjoys dinner with some friends at the hotel's restaurant. Afterward, he retires to his room, where he dies in his sleep. Divine suffers from an enlarged heart due to obesity. He is only 42 when he dies. His body is flown back to Maryland, where he is buried. One of the wreaths at his gravesite is sent by Whoopi Goldberg. It bears the remark: "See what happens when you get good reviews."

Geneva Williams: A Footnote in a Footnote's Footnotes

Hard at work on Dead in Hollywood: Dorothy Dandridge (Issue #9) and I’m finding it difficult to pull myself away from her mother, Ruby’s, story. Ruby was a successful radio and television actress in her own right who left her husband to live with her “companion” in 1922 America. Can you imagine? Sadly, her companion, Geneva Williams, was not a good woman. She overworks Dorothy and her sister, Vivian, and sexually assaults Dorothy one night after Dorothy returns home from her first date with a boy. I’d love to learn more about Geneva, but she’s become a footnote in another footnote’s footnotes.

Tab Hunter (born Arthur Andrew Kelm was a well-known Hollywood heartthrob in the 50’s and 60’s, known for his Malibu-styled clean-cut good looks. He comes out of the closet in his 2005 autobiography, Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star.
